Petaluma, Sonoma County
In the early 1900s Petaluma shipped so many eggs that it called itself the Egg Capital of the World. The boom began in 1879, when resident Lyman Byce developed a practical incubator, and hatcheries soon lined the edge of town. The poultry business has shrunk, but Petaluma still throws its Butter and Egg Days parade every April.
